With the grandparents in town, we took advantage and had a pub night. We were mainly comparing against our past favorite the Wheat Sheaf whose low, low prices, steamwhistle on tap and decent food is hard to beat.
The Longest Yard, was alright, but made us pretty nostalgic for our downtown days. At $13 for a not very large nachos with almost no toppings, we left slightly glum. No complaints re tastiness, but in general, I could have made the same thing at home for about $4. Once again our rich neighbors take us down - this neighborhood is clearly willing to pay a premium for good pub grub.

Henry the VIII Ale House
This pub is always extremely popular no matter what the day of week, so Ian and I thought we should check it out.
My mushroom risotto was good, but for $22 I would expect exceptional. Ian's pasta with shrimp, pea pods and tomatoes was also good with no complaints.
The only major downside here is price. At $75 all in for two ok meals and 1 glass of wine and 1 pint, it's definitely on the steep side. I suppose that is to be expected living in the Kingsway neighborhood. If I could charge those prices and get away with it, I would too!!!

Yellow Griffin
Ian was the winner today with the Calypso on Chicken. Bacon, mango, avocado and cheddar. With a gigantic mound of yummy sweet potato fries for $11.95.
I unfortunately got thrown off by not being able to order my creme caramel (onions, mushrooms and bbq sauce) and salmon and instead ordered with pork. It turned out dry and too saucy all at the same time. Extremely tasty onion rings, but a sparse compared to what we later saw coming out of the kitchen. $11.35.

Shoeless Joes - Why Are You a Chain?
Chains usually = tasty. Shoeless Joes certainly was not.
Ian's beer was ok, but is there really any excuse for not have steamwhistle on tap when the brewery is less than a km away?
Nachos came next. The tortilla chips were crispy and fresh but the cheese was a horrendous mix of pale cheese in a tube squirted on. I still get the heeby jeebies thinking of it!!! No complaints with the veggies on top.
We then shared plate of 1/2 rack of baby back ribs. Ribs themselves were ok, but with only 4 small-ish ribs, it was not a lot of food. Fries were good.
Finall bill was $54 with tax and tip. It makes me cringe to even think of how much we spent for a meagre amount of gross food! From here on in, we'll walk the extra 10 min and go the Wheat Sheaf (never ever let's us down!).

The Village Idiot Pub
After some Nathan Phillips Square skating action, we were both thirsty and hungry so we soon got over the lack of Steamwhistle at the Village Idiot Pub on Dundas.
Alternatively, I went with a grasshopper ($5.50) which I used to drink while living in Edmonton when I was feeling like a big spender.
In order to provide a head to head comparison with our favorite pub, the wheat sheaf, we ordered our typical pub grub meal of chicken fingers for Ian and a nachos to share.
Ian says "everything was very hot" like it's bad, but in my books that's good! I felt fries were especially tasty here. Pretty good deal for $8.95.
Basically every table has some nachos and I can see why. Lots of cheese, some jalapenos, onions, green peppers, tomatoes with salsa and sour cream for $10 or so. Not the same gigantic serving you get at the Sheaf, but that is probably better for health related purposes anyway??

L'Amere a Boire (Montreal)
This joint brews their own beer and it's much more delightful than their competition, Les 3 Brasseurs. After work, pints were a very reasonable $5.
The beer was starting to make me hungry, so a veggie burger was in order. I was moderately frightened when it came out with an odd looking butter/cheese item on top, but I went for it and was pleasantly surprised. Some sprouts, tomatoes and a grilled ciabatta bun were also there!
What was not included was fries. A bit troubling for an $8 burger!

Les 3 Brasseurs (Montreal)
Montreal pub at it's best or perhaps busiest, this place is nearly impossible to get in on Fridays after work, or even late evening.
Ian and I enjoyed a moderately priced pint each with some free peanuts for me. Total cost was $12.
The blonde & amber are probably the tastiest among the brew made on site, but of course grouchy Ian thought his tastest like pipe cleaners? Like what the heck is that flavor and how would he even know that???? Has he been munching on pipe cleaner lately??

Fox & Fiddle (Mississauga)
The Fox & Fiddle on Dundas & Winston Churchill is a pretty good happy hour deal (Monday through Friday 5-7). $5.00 pints of honey brown and tasty veggie and cheese half quesidallas for $5.50. An even better deal appears to be the chili cheese nachos for $7.

Wheat Sheaf vs the Maddy
In an unusual turn of events, Ian and I went out both Friday and Sat night for some pub/bar fun-ness.
Friday night was at the Wheat Sheaf on Bathurst. Highlights included:

- Cheap food (like $9 for a humongous plate of nachos, $8 or so for chicken finger and fries)
- Steamwhistle on tap
- OK patio
- Fun painted moose near the patio
- Lots of TV's for blue jays or hockey fans
- Extremely close to our place
- Somewhat cheap beer
- TO's oldest bar (like pre 1900 I think)
- Not exactly friendly service, but not unfriendly
- We did not order food, but in previous outings, the food is also pretty decent and cheap
- Also somewhat cheap beer (especially if you come pre 8 pm)
- Gigantic place with lots of patios
- A somewhat odd mix of people - t-shirts & jeans as well as the fully dressed up to go out crowd
- Rather far from us, but lots of good exercise when we walk there and back
- Surly service last night - other times not so bad
- Ian liked the heaters on the patio

The "Maddy" aka Madison Avenue Pub
On Friday night, we ventured over to the "Maddy" after the grad student party for a work/french class person birthday party. This joint was a good follow-up to the somewhat grungy scene from Ian's party.
It seemed to mainly consists of drunk people packed into a two renovated houses of fire hazard-y-ness quality. Again with sketchy bench seating - but this time I sat down and made a mental note to throw jeans direct into the washer!
Kelly and Ian has pints and total cost was about $14 including tax and tip- not a bad deal at all for the barely north of bloor area.
Some other people in the crowd ordered fries and nachos - overall pretty decent and I was a bit surprised to taste fresh cilantro in the salsa! Ian was easily impressed by the inclusion of some festive green and red chips with the nachos.
I note from the web-site that appetizers are half price from 3-7 with purchase of a drink. So a similar deal to the Unicorn Pub, but much, much, much closer to us!

Bedford Academy
Besides the aforementioned terrific grad student christmas party, I also had the TA union christmas party last week too. It was at the Bedford Academy up on Prince Arthur (I know north of bloor but only by a block)
We of course arrived just as the party started to ensure we'd have maximum time there. We found our union brothers and sisters in a nice room off to the side that was set aside for the party. The food soon started coming and it was pretty good. The usual bar fare with fries, nachos, pita + other dip-ables with sketchy dip and chicken wings was all reasonably tasty. There were some terrific surprises though. First decent sushi arrived which made the night for me. It wasn't the mediocre california rolls that I would expect (if I were expecting sushi) but instead decent pieces sushi nigri. Then much later on platters of mini-burgers came around and conveniently came to rest right in front of me. Once we also procured the condiment tray we were set for the night.
The food was plentiful and it definitely makes this month's union dues seem like good value. I just need 7 other events like this to make me happier about the other months of dues.

The union's key phrase is "Don't work for free" so it was funny to hear that this guy who handles all the "Don't work for free" quarrels feels like he's working too many hours.

Friar and Ferkin
Last night we went out with some of the work crowd - well more with one person in my french class who also happens to work at the same company as me and the people she works with. She also happens to have gone to school with my carpool buddy so he came too!
Anywho, the beer was pretty good at the Friar (John/Queen) and decently priced at about $5.50 a pint. Ian liked his chicken fingers with assorted greasy sides for $10. Kelly liked the sweet potato fries. I make it seem like I did not eat anything - but I did in fact graze on all of the aforementioned stuff and it was pretty tasty, although a little greasy for my new healthy eating regime. Falling off the healthy eating wagon for one night hopefully will not kill me!

Unicorn Pub
A couple of nights ago Ian and I ventured out to the Yonge/Eglinton area to the Unicorn pub. The "Appetizer Platter" was highly recommended by more than one person so I thought it would be good to check it out.
This place is pretty good value - $5.00 for a pint of moosehead (compared to $8 or so at "fancy" TO joints).
We then had the appetizer item - comes with tasty nachos and decent fries + you get to pick 2 items from the finger food menu...all for $16.95. In a quest of high amounts of value we had calmari and chicken fingers. They had other items such as veggie spring rolls and brushchetta but they were less expensive so of course we nixed them!
Everything was quite tasty and there was no way two of us could come close to finishing the fries or the nachos. Definitely cheap eating as its best!
They also seem to have 1/2 price appetizers every day from 5-7. Next time we'll go for that and avoid serious binge eating! Four thumbs in total - for tastiness and value!

Great, Good and Neutral
This week has been a bonanza of eating out.
Monday was a reception for scholarship winners at some company's headquarters. The tour of the facilities was only moderately interesting but the food was amazing. This was definitely the great. Reasons follow:
1) Open bar
2) Kobe Beef Sushi
3) Regular sushi
4) Lobster Maki
5) Massive sautéed shrimp
All items were very very tasty.
Thursday was the end of year party for the union. I've missed out on the last two so I was determined to go to this one. It was looking bad initially with only two drink tickets but the union came through for us in the end and gave us a basically limitless supply. The party was at the Duke of York. I think people like this place but I unfortunately am not one of them. As pub-style places go I think it's pretty good. They had these "neat" mini fish and chip servings. A tiny newspaper and a fish stick sized piece of fish. Pretty tasty. Overall this was the good.
Finally today was Swiss Chalet day. We had a coupon (of course) for a free appetizer. Janice had the appetizer (perogies) and I had the main course (chicken and ribs). That's definitely a split I could live with. Janice liked her stuff reasonably well but probably wouldn't get them again. I on the other hand would definitely the chicken and ribs again. It was tasty as always. I don't know if I'll go back to this swiss though because I didn't like the waitress at all. It's probably worth the walk up to king street to get people that have adequate social skills? For 20 bucks for 2 it wasn't a bad deal but I'll still have to say this is at best neutral because of the mean waitress and the fact that I got used to eating for free earlier in the week

Brasserie - super duper cheap eating!!!
On the way home from East, I noticed that the Brasserie seemed to have a super-duper lunch special thing going on! 2 items from their special menu for only $5!Ian had some pretty tasty fish, chips and coleslaw along with a rather large piece of grilled chicken with moroccon tomato sauce, couscous and chickpeas.
I had the frites with garlic aioli and chipotle ketchup. Also some creamy garlic penne pasta with tomato and mushroom.
All the food was pretty tasty, and with a total bill including tax tip and 1 cola for $16 it is hard to go wrong!!! I'm not sure how long this special is on, but I am going to put Ian in charge of walking by here on the way home to check it out for next weekend!

Banff Ski Vacation
Ian and I went skiing for a couple of days at sunshine and lake louise...stayed at the Banff YWCA. Not the nicest of places, but the price (even jacked up holiday pricing) was pretty good.
For food, here's what we did:
1. On way down, stopped off at Pete's Drive In on 16th ave in Calgary for fries, burgers and shakes. Only one of each item between the two of us = lots of tasty food, although not as cheap as you might expect.
2. First night in Banff, went to the usual, Magpie and Stump. Tasty tex mex food at about $12-15 per entree. Didn't really measure up after all the cheap mexican during Ian's californian adventure this past summer.
3. Earl's on the next night. Tried to get into old spaghetti, but was super busy. Ian had spicy seafood penne which was alright. I had kung pao noodles. Ian believes that I have spelled kung pao wrong, but I will not let it stop the blogging! Pretty tasty but ended up spending $42 including a lava lamp margarita. Ian thinks he may have overtipped though? Hard to say???
4. Next night went to Old Spaghetti Factory. Really not all that tasty, but horrendous amounts of food and drink for a mere $40 or so including 1/2 L of wine, bread, salad, pasta (including Ian's meatballs), ice cream, tea and cola for Ian. Wine was Sawmill Creek Merlot. Oddly kind of bitter. I guess to be expected at $8 for the half litre???
5. New Years Eve- tried to go back to the Magpie, but closed at 5, so could get ready for New Years Eve Party. Ian and I questioned wisdom of this, at $75 for the party and only one sitting for the night = much, much less profit compared to turing tables over an estimated 5 or 6 times on a regular night?? The place is always packed from about 4:30 pm to 1-2 am. Did not make a lot of sense. Anyway, went to Tommy's pub for fish and chips and veggie burger with guacamole. Tasty all around. Spent about $24 including a beer for me. Seemed to be where the locals hang out.
6. Way home- stopped at Tim's in Red Deer for my bagel with cream cheese and Ian had the new bacon and egg sandwich. Somewhat tasty and only $4.44!
7. The real star of the show was Ian's lunch and breakfast. He is back on the disgusting superstore greasy muffins now that he is back in E-town, so he ate one of those for breakfast. Usually, on the ski hill, Ian would eat a burger and pop. New cheap Ian bought a bunch of vector bars and then ate a few of those for lunch along with some fun cheeses. Nuts and granola bars for me!

The Pilot in Yorkville
I went to the ROM last night and then to the Pilot in Yorkville. The price at the ROM was right, free on Friday evenings! They seem to be undergoing some serious renovations and therefore the museum seemed a bit crappy and small, but I am thinking some of the wings were closed off.
Then it was off to Yorkville. The whole strip was rather busy, but we walked up to the roof of the Pilot and found a table. I shared a plate of nachos for about $11 and had two pints for $14, so a bit expensive, but pretty tasty overall. Yeah, that's about it. Sorry, not too exciting.

Ian and I went to Czehosk but it was super crowded and we couldn't even get a drink at the bar, so we went to the Wheat Sheaf on Bathurst and King. We were thinking of sneaky dees on college/bathurst but that was heading the wrong way for us in the rain.
The Wheat Sheaf looks good from the outside, but is a bit trashy on the inside (next time we may try the banknote like Ian wanted). I always like places that have moosewood on tap, so the wheat sheaf scored a few points with me right away. Ian had a rum and coke which was a bit odd for a hardcore beer drinking place. Crazy Ian obsessed with cola.

College Grill
The weather wasn't that great today so I didn't feel like walking to Mr Sub. After checking the line at the caf in a nearby building I opted for College Grill (near College and Beverley). I've been there before but this is the first time I got the chicken leg plate (6.89 with tax) which includes a leg, rice, 2 tiny potato things and a nasty salad. Overall the place isn't that great but it's convenient. Not really recommended unless you're stuck in the area.

Foggy Dew
I went for some brunch today with some friends. It's on King west of bathurst. The place was a cute pub withs some decent food. I had french toast with some weird banana type topping for $6.95. Seemed a bit overpriced since I could have made the equivalent for about $1 at home. Anyway, if you are into brunch go to Fressen (in the area, on Queen) or try making something at home. If you are into pubs or drinking, try the Foggy Dew.
