I gave into peer pressure, ditched a potentially useful lunch-time seminar and went out with the coworkers to all you can eat sushi/japanese/korean on Dundas.
The food came out quickly despite busy-ness, the tea was replenished and the empties taken away with great efficiency.
For food:
- Edamame was decent
- Grilled eggplant excellent although too oily
- Korean style galbi beef ribs good
- Bulgogi with random veggies - good
- Skip the teriyaki sushi
- Shrimp tempura was a hit with trays of the stuff passing by regularly
- Rolls - skip the spicy salmon, but the mushroom tempura, squash tempura, avocado plain, crispy avocado, spicy tempura california roll, grilled eel, salmon etc were all fantastic
- Sushi - the coworkers devoured a lot of salmon, grilled eel and other misc fish plus a salmon rose & salmon pizza
- Skip the tempura banana for dessert. The ice cream seemed more popular with other tables.
All this for about $18 including tax & tip (at lunch). Here's the website so you can check out the menu.

Spring Rolls on Front
Thanks to the relatives for the Spring Rolls Christmas gift card!
We took Gordie out for a 34'th b-day celebration and enjoyed a delightful spring roll platter with a cold shrimp roll, and deep fried rolls x 3. It came with a rather large mound of mango salad with a generous amount of cashews! All for $10.99. OK, now that I'm actually typing this, perhaps not a great deal, but it was yummy.
Gordies main course was veggie szhechuan noodles I think.

Ian of course gets the house satay pad thai with shrimp and other misc tastiness. It's pretty much his regular item and never disappoints!
I stayed away from red & green thai curries and went with veggie and tofu with satay sauce and rice. Sadly, not a heck of a lot of tasty veg in there. An overwhelming amount of salty sauce too. Next time, I will go back to my thai curries!

Mr. Ma (Montreal)
This is nominally upscale szechuan in downtown Montreal with prices to suit, but the menu was a bit all over the place.
I went with the salmon tempura meal with a spring roll to start, fried rice and a side of chinese type veggies. Delicious all around! About $20 per main course.
Other enjoyed their satay meals.

Korea Dumpling Tastiness
Ian occasionally makes me crazy, but I have to admit his strategy of only eating in busy restaurants worked for us while in Seoul. The Insadong strip is pretty busy and has hundreds of restaurants and craft stores.
We went with an absolutely packed dumpling place for dinner one night. What lured us in was the veggie & seafood pancake items on the menu, but once inside we noticed that all 100 or so diners seemed to have dumpling stew. We went with the herd and it was a fantastic idea.
How's this for an amazing race challenge? Find this restaurant! I'll give you a hint, it's mid strip and off a mini plaza.

For about 25000 Won (give or take $25), we got 2 beers, dumpling stew and quite the assortment of side dishes. We ordered no spice, so it was a meaty broth kind of thing. It comes to the table uncooked with a hotplate and you tend to it and then eat about 10 minutes later once everything boils.

Sides were 3/4 in good stuff (much higher average than most Korean restaurants we encountered). We didn't eat the kimchee, but the glass noodle salad, bean sprout salad and mountain greenery were all very delightful & refills were in order!

In the pot was a whole assorted bunch of mushrooms (side note Korea really does mushrooms better than Canada), a bit of bulgogi type thin sliced beef, 4 huge dumplings stuffed with pork & green onions + other assorted tastiness, greenery, onion and and garlic. Perhaps a bit of rice cake roll too.

Service was ok, although a bit frantic was serious running around like maniacs to try and keep up with all the diners.
Dumplings are made at the front of the store so you know they are fresh! Mmm..

Spring Rolls Yonge & Eglinton
I went out for dinner tonight with the curling team to Spring Rolls. Somehow, my veggie/tofu satay pad thai was both greasy and a congealed heap of noodles. You would think that the grease would de-congeale it, but it did not appear to the be the case.
I'm not sure what the problem is., Ian is a regular eater of pad thai at East and Spring Rolls Front Street and has never had the same problem. It could just be the location?
Others has delicious looking chicken and seafood type items.

Nakama (Pittsburgh)
My co-workers are obviously in the know in Pittsburgh - they took me out to a joint that is apparently #1 in sushi as well as the best restaurant in the Pitt....at least according to their website...
We got to Nakama about 6:30 on a Wed night and it was already rather packed. The host basically thought we were complete fools for showing up without a reservation. She did manage to squeeze us in at one of 10 hibachi grill stations. We started with a Majic Hat #9 beer and some edamame. I also had one of my boss's spicy california roll. Everything very very deelightful. I then ordered the grilled flank steak. With the meal, I got brothy soup, green salad, grilled mushroom appetizer, grilled veg, choice of steamed or fried rice and my meat.
The dude doing the cooking had all sorts of little tricks and it was a very entertaining show!
The flank steak was delicious when dipped in either the ginger/sesame/soy sauce or the thousand island dressing type thing.
My entree was $21, so not terrible value either!

Mongolian Hot Pot Fun (Montreal)
Robyn and I went out for some Montreal China Town hot pot action. Apparently, this joint is a chain in China and has only recently come to Canada.
Dinner started off rather poorly, when they asked if we wanted regular, spicy or half and half. Having NO IDEA what they were trying to ask me, I just said regular. It turned out to be the broth that we cook the stuff in. The regulars pretty much seemed to have half and half. Note to self, go with half and half next time.
Then, they bring out a plate of beef and a plate of mystery meat. After further inquiry, we find out that is it lamb. Robyn seems happy, me less so.
While walking in, we spied some rows of veggies, seafood etc. Our waiter thought that we were complete idiots when we tried to ask him if the stuff up there costs extra. He didn't appear to speak english or french, so we ventured up and hoped for the best.
I grabbed some bok choi, mushrooms x 3 types, squash, broccoli, fried tofu etc. Robyn got all sorts of shrimp and fishy type items.
We further appeared like idiots when I grabbed a mini plate to load up. Apparently, EVERYONE knows that you should stack your stuff up on the large plate.
The first cooking went reasonably well and the food was pretty tasty.
More stupidity ensued, when all that salty broth made us thirsty. I tried to ask for water, but had no success. During the next round of bok-choi round up, I noticed a drink dispensing station. It was pretty much the world's slowest drink dispenser, but the water had a deelightful lemon flavour.
The next mini crisis was due to the water balance. Robyn was scooping up her stuff with a slotted spoon, hence no water problems. I did not notice the slotiness and instead was fishing out my food with a normal spoon. Soon, I had my little bowl filled up with liquid and we were starting to run out in the hot pot. The waiter came and bailed us out of our problems with a timely replenishment of broth.
Dessert was surprisingly good - Chinese style donuts and cookies etc.
Total was $40 including tax, tip and beverage station.

Sushi Inn
Ian and I ventured out to Yorkville for a car emissions test. While waiting, we headed over to the Sushi Inn.
The joint was already pretty busy when we arrived at 11:55 or so!
I went with the "Silver Box" which included 6 makis (3 salmon, 3 cucumber), miso soup, salad, rice, veggie tempura, fried tofu and teriyaki mushrooms. A fantastic deal for $9.95.
Ian had "combo H" with 6 maki and 5 sushi for $7.95.
The miso soup was surprisingly tasty although rather hot (I guess that is good though?). Always classy Ian dumped some water into the soup to cool things down.
The maki was rather small but cute and better than normal. My bento box items were all very good and extremely hot. Even with Ian's help, I did not come close to finishing everything. Ian seemed sufficiently pleased with his sushi.

Sanko Japanese Store

We came across this delightful little store, Sanko, at 730 Queen street East.
They had quite an extensive, but expensive, collection of Japanese pottery items for sushi, tea, bento boxes and the like.
Also a decent collection of food including seaweed, snacks (I bought some rice cracker snacks), veggies, frozen food, noodles etc etc.

Sushi Star
On the way to pick up a burrito the other day, an amazing sign caught my eye. It had three key features "$9.99", "All you can eat" and "Sushi". Those three bits made the sale and so for Thursday lunch I convinced the lunch crew to go.
This new place is the Sushi Star on Spadina adjacent to the Red Room. They also advertised cheap lunch combos but of course we went with the all you can eat. The all-you-can-eat menu was somewhat limited though: 2 types of sushi (salmon and red snapper), 7 or 8 types of rolls and a bunch of stuff from the kitchen. We quickly filled out our first order and the food started rolling in. I skipped the soup and salad courses to ensure I could take full advantage of the sushi but people seemed to enjoy them. First for me came the shrimp tempura. Pretty good, better than Ho Su's tempura but a little too bready to rank amongst my best ever. Then the rolls started appearing. We went for the multiple of everything policy without knowing what any of the names rolls were and that seemed to work out well. We ended up with some salmon skin rolls that I quite liked and a bunch of others.
We devoured all that and there was still no sign of the sushi so I was starting to get a little anxious that the big numbers we had put down for number of sushi pieces had scared them off. But not to worry, the sushi eventually showed up and we quickly finished that off.
For the next and final round of orders we basically repeated our first order with a few new items from the kitchen.
Overall for 13 bucks with tax and tip it was definitely a good outing. As one guy who just finished remarked, "I only wish this place was around 4 years ago when I started"

Ho Su
We walked in the "Blizzard" to return Ian's library books so to reward ourselves for the bravery, there was basically no choice but to go to Ho Su for an early dinner.
We both partook in the specials for the day- I had the vegetarian roll set with avocado maki and kappa/yam tempura maki (12 pieces in total). Ian had the Korean chicken which came with a horrendous amount of reasonably tasty chicken in sauce, glass noddles, bean sprouts/carrots, rice and coleslaw.
Also included were two (only lukewarm) bowls of miso soup, salad x 2, edamame, sweet potato, beans and kimchee.
All this tastiness for only $15.80 including tax/tip and tap water x 2!

East
First of all - thank you KP for the run for the cure donation!
Last night we went to East - I strayed away from the usual veggie and tofu red thai curry with rice and went with a special - salmon with peanut sauce and sticky rice. The price was about double my usual, but it was about double in tastiness so it worked out fairly well. Predicable aka boring Ian went with his usual seafood satay pad thai. He ate the whole thing and seemed to enjoy.
The KP and Steve had noodle seafood type things. Not my favorite - but they seemed to like!
Veggie spring rolls also tasty and decent value for $3.
Then we went (minus Ian) to the Grey Cup Great Big Sea + others Molson Canadian Rocks Party, where, not surprisingly, we drank some Molson Canadian.
The highlight of the night were some hooligans sitting in front of us...spilling beer and flicking illicit cigarette butts onto their own pile of coats.
Then, one dude decides to go topless (and he is not the most attractive guy either), and attempts to bellyflop onto a rather high bar table with their 20 half empty cups of beer. He kinda misses and just knocks the table down. Then, they grab a garbage can, so he jumps up on that, then hops onto the table (about chest high), then tries to leap onto a chair from there. He kinda misses the chair and ends up hitting the ground pretty hard. Surprisingly, he seemed to have no broken bones. I guess 20 beers loosens you up a little?

Ho Su on Queen
Ho Su, as usual, was pretty tasty and quick. Better yet, it is delightfully close and doesn't seem to make Ian sick like our old favorite, New Gen.
Ian had the $10 lunch sushi special with 3 pieces tuna, 3 salmon, 3 piece some mystery white butter fish and 8 piece california roll. More fish than you would want to eat in a sitting and indeed he did not finish! I had a more modest meal with 8 pieces avocado and cucumber maki ($3).
Despite Ian's big spending ways, total was $16.70 including tax, tip, tap water, side dishes (potato tastiness, gimchee, edamame, beans).

Ian and I went for a quick dinner tonight at Ho Su on Queen. All was delightful and cheap except for the tempura. Ian had some california roll/chiken teriyaki type item. I had veggie sushi combo. Total bill was $26 including t,t,t,s,s,e,m,b,k (tax, tip, tap water, soup, salad, edamame, mystery saucy veggie, beans, kimchee).

New Gen - Back in Action
I lured Ian into going out for dinner with the promise of a ride home. Ha ha! We went to New Gen and I, as usual, had the Yasai Veggie box for $7.95. Came with a good assortment of tasty veggie stuff. Ian had the Take box for $10.95, came with salmon teriyaki and salmon rolls + a whole ton of other tasty treats. Some ice cream on the house at the end.
They have improved since the last time we were there and are now officially veering back toward the yet to be posted "best of" list and are moving away from the also yet to be posted "wall of shame".
The only thing that I didn't like was the sushi making guys didn't yell out their typical hearty thank you/good bye thing at the end :(

East
We went out for dinner tonight to East, part of the mini-spring rolls chain.
I was going to title the post "East...of the 427", but Ian nixed it and said it wasn't funny :( He then pointed out that everywhere we eat is "East" of the 427, but actually the joke is that the place is actually called "East". Anyway, I thought it was funny and since it's my blog, I can type whatever I want. Well it's half Ian's blog, but it is my post. So there!
Ian had satay seafood pad thai for the rather pricey amount of $10.95 while cheap Janice (that's me) had veggie and tofu szechuan with rice for a mere $6.95. Wait, now we're having doubts and possibly I had black bean stir fry. To start, some veggie spring rolls for $3.50 or something like that.
As usual, high marks for tastiness!
Total bill was $27.69 including tax, tip and two tap waters.

Mandarin Buffet
One of my co-workers is heading to the UK for 6 months, so we had a little going away lunch at the Mandarin in Mississauga.
I was expecting the worst - Reno buffet style, but was pleasantly surprised. To start, I had some veggie sushi maki (cucumber, mixed veggie, spring roll/tempura filled). All were quite delightful + I scored a big hit of pickled ginger.
I skipped right over the salads, they didn't look bad, but they didn't look all that great either.
For the main course, I had a veggie spring roll, squash tempura, two noodle type dishes and assorted Chinese style veggies (three dishes in all). The meat eaters in the crowd had about 20 more meaty dishes to pick from...all looked reasonably tasty. They had a special bun festival going on, but sadly no veggie ones so I skipped it. They had about 4 varieties though.
Dessert was surprisingly good, I skipped the fruit, squares and cake selection and went for a mini-sundae. They had 8 kinds of ice-cream, fro yo and sorbet along with chocolate/caramel sauce and an assortment of tasty toppings.
Price was $10.99 per person. Even came with a fortune cookie at the end.
