Auberge De Pommier

For the final installment of Winterlicious we went to Auberge De Pommier for Sunday lunch out in the "country" as Ian likes to call anything north of Eglinton.

Here's the Winterlicious Menu. Auberge is certainly not the cheapest lunch out there, but $30 is a pretty good deal for one of the top restaurants in T.

I really liked the locale - an 1860's cottage in historic York Mills. Ian liked that we got seated by a window with sunshine (and a heating vent) to warm us up after a "got there too early walk around the neighborhood outing/snowball fight".

Bread (crusty french and cinnamon spiced) with artichoke tapanade was especially good.

Ian looks on with an Auberge sparkler in the foreground (fruit juice and soda). Not fantastically cheap for $4.95, but certainly tasty with a strong tangerine flavor. To bolster the Winterlicous cause and to avoid feeling really cheap, Ian went with a $10 glass of Niagara Pinot Grigio.

The salad was particularly good - fresh greens, raisins, walnuts and great dressing.

Ian went heavier with a parsnip veloute with cardamon and creme fraiche. This is definitely amongst the top soups I have ever had!

My roast chicken with cornmeal polenta, mushrooms and maderia jus was fantastic, although I might be inclined to lose the chicken skin. I have to admit it did make the dish look really good and it tasted even better, but for healthful purposes, I left half behind. Polenta was a nice change from the usual potatoes etc that often frequent meaty dishes at nice restaurants.

Ian's grilled salmon with greens, potato with sauce bois boudran was perfectly cooked with lots of flavor. A pretty hearty portion too for lunch winterlicious!

Our waiter recommended the spice cake with frozen creme fraiche and cranberry orange sauce. This was certainly a good call - it was like dark fruitcake minus the fruit but tastier and better looking with a fun sugar thing on top.

And for the piece de resistance - Brioche Pudding Jiggles with extremely insightful and witty commentary.

Final bill was $96 for two including tax and tip. Well worth it and we might even come back sometime for a regular celebration dinner of some sort!

Le Grand Comptoir (Montreal)

I went with the co-workers on Wednesday night to this French Bistro in Phillips Square downtown.

The menu was a small, but there was a good selection of various takes on steak frites, duck, fish, pork and a pasta. Also typical french appetizers like escargot & smoked salmon salad etc.

With every entree, a deelightful soup of the day was included (leek potato). For my meal, I has the flank steak. It came with tasty frites and a side of salad. For $16, the whole lot was a great deal and I will definitely be back for a cheap, but really good dinner!

Cafe Paris (Montreal)

Crepes were on the menu today after work. I walked over to Crescent and spotted the moderately busy Cafe Paris. After an ordering fiasco and 20 minute delay, I finally got a pretty tasty nutella strawberry crepe for about $9.

I tried not to think about the chef scratching his head and then touching the crepes or the guy taking money who then went and cut up my stawberries. Hopefully no illness results!

Crepes To Go (Montreal)

Aside from this joint being ridiculously close to my hotel (Parc Ave & Sherbrooke area), it is also fast, cheap and tasty! How can you beat that??

It's perhaps not special trip worthy joint, but they do make a decent crepe. I had a spinach and cheese that featured somewhat crispy crepe shell, fresh spinach and well melted yummy cheese. They even threw a few pieces of fresh fruit on there for good measure.

Basically no complaints here. Next time, I'll skip main course and just go with dessert. These items mainly seemed to resolve around nutella...mmmm....

Le Cochon Dingue

While in Quebec City or the Q. as Ian likes to call it - we went to the "Crazy Pig". This joint is rather popular. The location in Old Quebec was huge (Quartier Petit Champlain), but still packed on a Friday night and we waited about 20 min for a table.

We both ordered the Table D'Hote for about $28. This is definitely something that the TO restaurants should do! An excellent deal, although we both could get chubby pretty quickly!

My meal included:
  1. Carrot ginger soup...yummy!
  2. Tasty rolls with boring butter
  3. Salad - the pine nuts upgraded the tasty factor
  4. Steak frites - I went with peppercorn sauce. Steak was small, but good.
  5. Choice of dessert - I ordered triple chocolate cake for Ian...was good but could have used a bit of ice cream instead of the whipped cream
  6. Choice of beverage - I went with a coke
Ian enjoyed his meal of:

  1. Carrot ginger soup & rolls
  2. 1/2 rack of BBQ ribs - very good BBQ sauce!
  3. Fried potato skins & side of cesear salad with real bacon and real Parmesan
  4. Raspberry square which I ate
  5. Cola
