And..More Korean...but at Home

I have very few regrets in my life, but not buying $1 stone dolsat bi-bim-bop bowls at the dollar store in Korea is one of them. I put 100% of the blame for this on Ian. I hope he feels bad (but he probably doesn't).

Only a very minor amount of genius on my part has saved us from this dilemma. The bop for 2 in a common pan (with a handle) is a little unorthodox, but seemed to do the job when baked in the oven!

And here's the final product, all mixed up!

Yellow Griffin

Ian was the winner today with the Calypso on Chicken. Bacon, mango, avocado and cheddar. With a gigantic mound of yummy sweet potato fries for $11.95.I unfortunately got thrown off by not being able to order my creme caramel (onions, mushrooms and bbq sauce) and salmon and instead ordered with pork. It turned out dry and too saucy all at the same time. Extremely tasty onion rings, but a sparse compared to what we later saw coming out of the kitchen. $11.35.

Miga for Dinner

Although a little more expensive than Korea (OK, a lot more), Miga was well worth it for BBQ dinner.

With the $42 BBQ combo #1 for 2 people, we got 2 miso soups, 2 trays of side dishes, 2 rice, lettuce leaves, sauces and a platter of meat including beef short ribs, beef steak, pork spareribs and chicken.

The meat was marinated in tasty sauces and was high quality.

I really liked how they changed the grill 3 times while we ate!

It seems as though the rest of Mississauga agrees with us - on a Saturday night at 6:30, Miga was packed (maybe 100-150 seats)!

Z-Teca

I swung by Z-Teca for Thursday night post Mountain Equipment Co-Op shopping and was not disappointed.

BBQ flavored slow cooked beef, black beans, grilled peppers and onions, medium green salsa and cheese on a whole wheat tortilla for about $7.50. Ian might have found it a bit small, but it was probably more food than I should have eaten for dinner!

It was somewhat empty, but they seem to do more take-out than eat in.

Ian (or course), had some complaints on a previous visit!

World's Lamest Maple Syrup Festival

At Bruce's Mill Conservation Area.
- The tour guides were barely audible
- The tour route itself was sparse and took 15 minutes to get through. It basically seemed to consist of wood cut-outs in the forest
- "Interpreters" were un-communicative and hardly talked when I asked questions
- $8 for this is a complete rip off!!

For an extra $1 per person, just go to Westfield Heritage Village!

Here's me getting friendly with one of the cut-outs

Famous Dave's BBQ

This place is seriously tasty! I guess that's why it's taken over the US in the form of either franchises or chains??

$25 including tax, tip and a Sam Adams beer at the Duluth location got me:

- 1/2 rack of ribs. About 7 fall off the bone ribs with delicious bbq sauce. Perfectly cooked and lots of flavor
- 1/3 cob of overcooked corn
- tasty cornbread muffin - so moist that butter not required
- Creamy coleslaw...mmm
- BBQ beans - real meaty chunks in there with some chipotle flavor
- My choice of 4 bbq sauces on the side. The "regular" sauce was best, but I also tried out the sweet and the texas style.

Here's the web-site.

World's Best Veggie Sushi

At New Generation! While living in the Annex, we frequented this place more than I'd like to admit.

To break from old traditions, we spent it up and ordered an appetizer of edamame for $3.95. Not a bad value for quite a lot of salted green bean action. And is seems healthier than our usual plan of going for dessert to future afterward for cake.

I've only strayed from the G, yam maki lunch set ($5.99) a few times and I've always regretted it! I love this veggie sushi so much that while I moved away from Toronto, I would actually make the squash tempura-avocado rolls at home!

Here's a close-up of the world's best flavor combination...

Ian generally gets the #1 bento box with beef (also $5.99), but due to Good Friday he ordered one of the lunch sushi sets. All was good except for the egg sushi which he does not eat under any circumstances.

Total bill was $21 including tax and tip!!!

Miga for Lunch

After Korean food overload in Korea, we were ready to come back.

I went with the lunch crew to Miga (Mississauga) and for $10, I got the beef short ribs with rice in a hot dolsat stone bowl. This was an overwhelming amount of flavorful beef. Even better was that only one rib still had the rib as the kitchen saved me the effort and cut the bone off the rest! Also included was miso soup and a tasty assortment of side dishes. I liked how each person got their own tray of greens, sprouts and potatoes!

Shoeless Joes - Why Are You a Chain?

Chains usually = tasty. Shoeless Joes certainly was not.

Ian's beer was ok, but is there really any excuse for not have steamwhistle on tap when the brewery is less than a km away?

Nachos came next. The tortilla chips were crispy and fresh but the cheese was a horrendous mix of pale cheese in a tube squirted on. I still get the heeby jeebies thinking of it!!! No complaints with the veggies on top.

We then shared plate of 1/2 rack of baby back ribs. Ribs themselves were ok, but with only 4 small-ish ribs, it was not a lot of food. Fries were good.

Finall bill was $54 with tax and tip. It makes me cringe to even think of how much we spent for a meagre amount of gross food! From here on in, we'll walk the extra 10 min and go the Wheat Sheaf (never ever let's us down!).
