Radichio and Belgian Endive

I've been buying new veggies that I have not tried before. I baked the aforementioned veggies with some salt/pepper and olive oil and drizzled on some balsamic vinegar.

These veggies were extremely, extremely BITTER! Not sure if I picked up defective veggies, or this is how they normally are??

I also find Radichio quite bitter and tend to only use a little of it in a mixture with other greens. I quite like Belgian Endive and sometimes have served the individual leaves as an appetizer with stuff inside of it (which may have masked the bitterness).
